Mental Health in the United States

In the United States, health insurance is a lot more complex. It consists of private insurance funded programs and a diminishing public sector system. In 2010, 64% of Americans had private insurance, and 16.3% were uninsured. That is over 16 times as many people uninsured than in France (Delamare, p. 6)

The adults of our future suffer from mental health issues and we don’t focus on it enough. College students suffer from depression, anxiety and even thoughts of suicide. Even those of Ivy leagues have these issues. The National College Health Association has found that students reporting depression has jumped from 32.6% in 2013 to 40.2% in 2017 (United States…, p. 1).

Colleges have seen a rise in mental health issues in the past few years because of the pressure that is put on the future of our students. Cornell has found that their students have been using mental health services increasingly more with in the past 10 years. Since the 2005-06 school year up until the 2016-17 school year, the services used for mental health have increased 7%. The acceptance of seeking out help for these issues can help the numbers rise more (United States…, p. 1).
